Distorted Glow Tutorial

Tutorials Nov 9, 2013

This is one of those effects you won’t be using very often (if ever), but it’s useful to learn more about the compositor and open to new ideas. This tutorial is based on 2.68 and uses Cycles (but can also work with BI).

Difficulty: Intermediate (you should know your way around Blender)

The Setup

Delete that wimpy default cube and add a Monkey to the scene. Rotate it so it’s facing the camera, then rotate on the X axis so it’s looking slightly downwards. The latter is a matter of style, you can do whatever you want. Now, we need darkness to appreciate light so go to the properties panel and set the world background color to pure black.

Master Sword

Art Nov 9, 2013

Childhood memories, modern looks… Hi guys, I’ve working on low-poly tribute to  Zelda:A Link To The Past. I’m sure remembers finding the master sword in the forest, right? Final render took 2000 samples and some clamp-tweaking to get rid of fireflies. In hindsight I should have used BI for this, I’m becoming a bit of a Cycles fanboy :P

Render+ 1.5 released

News Nov 6, 2013

Hi everyone, a new version of Render+ is out now! The big news is full support for Windows and OS X and some minor bug fixes.

Get Render+ on the Blender Market!

In case anyone forgot, Render+ is a Blender Addon. Here’s a quick summary of features:

  • Adds buttons to quickly start rendering the current blend file in the background. These render jobs run separate from the Blender window, so you can close your file and do something else while it renders.
  • Allows you to run a custom command when rendering is complete. This is for advanced users who want to move files, upload them to an FTP server, etc.
  • Can set the computer to sleep or turn it off when a render is complete.

Render+ is an addon that allows you to start background renders from within Blender and much more

Get Render+ on the Blender Market!

Features

Adds buttons to quickly start rendering the current blend file in the background. These render jobs run separate from the Blender window, so you can close your file and do something else while it renders.

Allows you to run a custom command when rendering is complete. This is for advanced users who want to move files, upload them to an FTP server, etc. Can set the computer to sleep or turn it off when a render is complete.

Monitoring Background renders

A render.log file is generated in the same folder where your render is saved. You can open this file in a text editor like Sublime Text, or use the tail command in a terminal, like so:

tail -f /home/[user]/MyRender/render.log

Notes

  • You need to save your file before you start a BG render
  • Supports only Linux at the moment (Mac, BSD and Windows coming soon!)
  • H264 isn’t available in the command line (for BG renders)

Hope you can find it useful!

Hairs in Cycles

Here’s some fur/tentacle balls I made while studying hair in Blender. I’m really impressed with the hair system, you can even comb the hairdo in your models!

Left clickin' in Blender

News Oct 18, 2013

Here’s a keymap I’ve been using for a while in Blender. One of the most common complains about Blender is having to select things with the right mouse button instead of the left. There are apparently good reasons for this, but it always felt kind of akward. So I made a key configuration preset that has a more “standard” behavior.

This is what it does:

  • Sets right-click to the add menu in 3D view
  • Sets Ctrl + left-click to set the 3D cursor
  • Lets you scrub in the timeline using left-click (but you can also use right-click)
  • Sets right-click to add node in the node editor and in the logic editor
  • Sets Ctrl + right-clickto the add menu in the VSE

To install in Blender, go to File > Preferences. Go to the “Input” tab and click on “Import key configuration”. Just navigate to where you downloaded the file. Don’t forget to set “Select with” to Left!
